Why Should We Take Up Yoga?

Written by Mary Risman CYPPT owner of Yoga Plus

Yoga has been around for so many years and overtime we have come to modernize this form of exercise.  Being a yoga instructor I have over the years really found out what yoga can do for you. It has helped numerous of my clients manage their special conditions like Parkinson’s Fibromyalgia, lower back pain, Osteoporosis and so much more.

I believe that everyone should take up this wellness exercise because it really does keep the body very healthy.  Before I started yoga I hardly had any energy and now to my delight I do not tire easy.

Most of my clients have some form of a special condition but  really healthy people should not turn their heads away from yoga as they will find out in due time what the great benefits of yoga are:

1)       A Releaser of Stress

2)      A Releaser of Depression

3)      Will help to calm the mind

4)      Will help to strengthen, lengthen and tone the muscles

5)       Give more balance

6)      Give more flexibility

7)      An energy enhancer

It is such a wonderful wellness exercise that does not place strain on your body and one that you can practice for the rest of your life.

The Yoga Mat and Other Yoga Props

Written By Sarah Russell

If you're just beginning your yoga practice, don't be frustrated if you aren't as strong or as flexible as the more advanced students. This type of flexibility is developed over time with continued yoga practice. If you're having trouble completing some of the poses, consider using props to help you reach the correct position. Using yoga props helps support the muscles and minimize strain so that you can continue practicing without injuring yourself.

Yoga props can also help elderly people and those with medical ailments to exceed their limitations, providing support and enabling them to perform the poses they would not normal be able to do. Of course, you don't need to invest in any expensive equipment to practice yoga - you can do it naked in your living room without any fancy gear. However, if you're just getting started, these props can make your yoga practice much more enjoyable and rewarding.

Mats: The yoga mat is one of the most important yoga props. Yoga mats are also called sticky mats - and that's what they do! When used on a hard floor surface, the mat will stay in place, giving you the traction you need to perform the poses. Even when you start to get sweaty, your hands and feet won't slip. The mat also gives your knees a little cushion when you're kneeling on a hard surface.

Mats aren't expensive - you can pick up a good one for under $30 and it'll last a long time. If you're just starting at a gym, they'll probably have some that you can borrow. However, out of hygienic concerns, get your own and bring it with you. You don't know who used that mat before you!

Blankets: Some studios will provide blankets for students to use during practice. If you're having trouble performing some seated poses, you can fold them up and sit on them, changing the angle of the pose and improving alignment. They're also great for covering yourself up during the final corpse pose - you'll be so much more relaxed when you're warm and toasty under your blanket.

Straps and Blocks: Yoga straps and blocks are also handy tools to have when you're just starting out. Both can be used to modify poses to make them easier if you aren't that flexible yet. If you're taking an introductory class, ask the teacher to help you use them throughout the class. He or she will be able to recommend the best way to modify poses with these props.

Attire: You might not think of your workout clothes as props, but what you wear can have a huge impact on how well you practice. You don't need to invest in a certain brand or specific article of clothing, but you should make sure that your attire is comfortable and breathable. Women, also consider a form-fitted top for yoga practice. Sometimes your head ends up lower than your hips which can cause your top to slide down. You can now submit questions about Yoga or Pilates to mary Risman who is the owner of Yoga Plus by emailing her at yogaplus@rogers.com   Mary will be happy to answer your questions.

Here are some testimonials below

After taking ballet/jazz classes for many years.  I decided to try yoga, and was very surprised to learn that it wasn't boring at all.  Then, years later, after becoming a mother and being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, I decided to give it a try again, not knowing for sure if I'd be able to do the poses.  Thanks to mary ( Yoga Plus), I regained the strength I needed to go about with my day of domestic "diva".    Emotionally speaking the impact of yoga in my life has been huge.   It gave me the confidence of knowing that I can go as far as I want, provided I respect my body and listen to it.   I'm now back into the work force, and always look forward to coming to Yoga Plus for a very pleasant yoga session.

I began Yoga approximately the end of Jan 2008, I only had a couple of classes behind me and I was hooked.

I hadn’t much exercise built into my daily routine and really needed something for myself, well Yoga fit like a glove, so much so that I started to come twice a week!

As I have carpel tunnel in both wrists Mary has helped me out a lot to build up strength and I now don’t have anything close to the pain I used to deal with.

Emotionally and Mentally Yoga and Mary have really given me strength for my mind, body and soul to get through a lot of tough times I’ve been dealing with in my life.

I have been practicing yoga for the past two years, in that time I have tried a number of yoga instructors.
When I found Mary, I found someone who is both caring and deeply interested in each individual client, ensuring always ,that the excercise is suited to   that persons needs and abilities.
I suffer from Parkinsons and have found yoga to be a key element in maintaining body flexibility.
I would whole heartedly recommend this gentle but effective form of exercise to all ages

As a young person, I loved practising yoga but gradually it slipped out of my life.   I'm retired now and for years, miles of walking has been my only exercise.   A diagnosis of osteoporosis several years ago,   plus "frozen shoulder"   about a year ago (the result of a fall),   told me I needed to do more than "just walking".     When I heard that someone, right on my street, taught yoga, I knew there was no excuse-time for yoga again.   That is how I met Mary.   After a month of 1 night a week classes, I knew I wanted to do 2 nights.   Slowly but surely my body has stretched and strengthened.   At the 6 month point I began to really see and feel the changes.   One huge benefit is the change in   my breathing-it used to be quite shallow.   I focus now on keeping it deeper and steady, not just in class but   at any time of the day, especially   when stressed.   I am also aware of my posture and body alignment which were not good.   Yoga   helps me to carry my body in a healthy and confident way.   My thanks to Mary for two nights a week of happy, helpful yoga lessons and all the benefits they bring.
